What happens

Årsjögård is a rebuilt Viking farm on the shore of Årsundasjön, started by Sandviken municipality in 1993 and run since 2003 by Fafner, a reenactment association. In the two July weeks the houses are staffed: costumed Vikings show visitors round, and each day has a fixed program at noon, one, two and three o’clock, with storytelling, fire striking, Viking games and a dress show. There is archery, a cookhouse selling simple food, a fire house where you can grill your own picnic, and a small shop. It is a farm, not a market: there are no traders and no battles.

What visitors say

We have not found independent visitor reviews in English. The association takes its own camp to markets elsewhere, including Saltvik on Åland in late July, which is why the farm closes for a week in the middle of the season. The autumn gathering in September, in its twentieth year in 2026, is a members’ event with a mini market, bartering, games and a blot, and the organizer does not say whether the public is welcome.

Our take

Årsunda is for people already in Gästrikland or driving the E4 north towards the High Coast, and for families who want a quiet Viking half day rather than a crowd. The program is short and repeats, so an afternoon covers it. It is too far from Stockholm to justify on its own when Storholmen and Birka are an hour away, but as a stop on a longer drive north it is the only Viking site for a long way. Check the dates: the farm is open for two weeks, closed for one, then open for weekday tours, and nothing else in summer.

Our take is based on visitor reviews, reenactor forums and the organizer’s own program, not on a visit. We say so because we think you should know.

Getting there

By car only. From Stockholm take the E4 to Gävle, the E16 to Sandviken and then road 272, the Tidernas väg, fifteen kilometres south to Årsunda; the organizer reckons two and a quarter hours from Stockholm, forty minutes from Gävle and fifteen from Sandviken. Bus 47 between Sandviken and Gysinge stops nearby, but check the weekend timetable. Arlanda is two hours south.
