Borrekaupangen Viking Market 2028: held every other year, dates not announced
Borrekaupangen, the Borre Viking Market, is held every second year in early July in Borre Park in Horten, Norway, among the largest collection of monumental Viking Age burial mounds in Scandinavia, an hour and a half south of Oslo. It is run by the Borre Vikinglag association, and the next one is in 2028.

What happens
Vikings from Norway and abroad set up a trading camp below the Borre mounds: crafts, historically inspired food, staged battles and storytelling about the age when Vestfold was a centre of power. It runs every second year, so a summer without it is normal rather than a sign it has stopped; in the odd years the museum runs the Midgard Viking Festival at the Gildehallen instead. The Midgard Viking Centre next door has a reconstructed great hall, the Gildehall, and an exhibition on the mounds, and it is open whether or not the market is on.
What visitors say
Reviews of the Midgard Viking Centre are positive with one recurring caveat, summed up by a Tripadvisor headline: manage your expectations. The centre is small. The exhibition is called informative and high quality, the staff knowledgeable and friendly, the reconstructed Gildehall beautifully decorated, and the mounds themselves magnificent. Visitors who came during the Viking market say it definitely added to the day, with archery and axe throwing popular across ages. The market itself is a family event of modest size; Midgardsblot in August is the site’s big crowd.
Our take
Come to Borre for the mounds and the hall, and come during Borrekaupangen if the year is right, because the market fills a site that is otherwise a quiet museum and a walk. Check the year before you plan around it: 2026 has been and gone, and the next is 2028. It is an easy day from Oslo by train and bus, and the natural stop between Oslo and the Vestfold coast. If you want big, wait for Midgardsblot; if you want children and daylight, this is the weekend.

Getting there
Sandefjord Torp Airport is half an hour away. From Oslo, take the train to Skoppum and a local bus or taxi to Borre, or drive the E18 south. Horten has ferries to Moss across the fjord for anyone coming from the east side.
