What happens

A reconstructed Viking village on the site of an Iron Age settlement fills with traders and reenactors from Finland, Sweden and further afield. Textiles, ironwork, leather, bread and mead on the stalls; combat displays, music and weapon games in the arena; combat training and crafts for children. Fibula, the society behind it, also runs the village through the summer with feasts and guided visits.

Getting there

Åland is reached by ferry. Viking Line and Tallink Silja sail from Stockholm to Mariehamn in about five and a half hours, and from Turku in about five. From Mariehamn, Saltvik is 25 minutes north by car; local buses run but are infrequent. Flights to Mariehamn from Stockholm and Helsinki are short but few.

Where to stay

Mariehamn has the hotels. Saltvik and neighbouring Sund have guesthouses, cabins and campsites, and Kastelholm castle and the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum are ten minutes away.
