The Viking Museum, Stockholm: a good first hour on Djurgården
A compact, modern museum on Djurgården with an eleven-minute story ride in nine languages, live fighting demonstrations and a clear introduction to the Viking Age. Good with children and as a first stop; the real finds are at the Swedish History Museum across the water.
What it is
The Viking Museum, still often called Vikingaliv, opened in 2017 on Djurgården, the museum island a short walk from the Vasa Museum. It tells the Viking Age through films, scenic environments and a story ride called Ragnfrid’s Saga: eleven minutes following a family through trade and raiding in tenth-century Europe, available in nine languages and included in the ticket, as many times as you like. There are live demonstrations with role-players and a restaurant.
Who it is for
Families, first-time visitors and anyone who wants the story told well before seeing the objects. Reviewers praise the explanations and the ride. It is not an archaeological museum: the great finds from Birka and the rest of Sweden are at the Swedish History Museum on Östermalm, which is free and has a large Viking hall. See both if you can, this one first.

Open Monday to Friday 11:00 to 17:00 and weekends 10:00 to 17:00 in 2026. Tickets online or at the door; check the site for prices. Allow an hour and a half. Cards everywhere.
Getting there
Djurgården is reached by tram 7 from the city centre, by ferry from Slussen or Nybroplan, or on foot across the Djurgården bridge. The museum is on the waterfront at Djurgårdsstrand near the Vasa Museum and the Nordic Museum.
