The Als Viking Market is held in mid-June at Kær Vestermark in Sønderborg, on the island of Als in southern Denmark, close to the German border. Around 300 Vikings recreate camp life, crafts, combat and storytelling in what the organizers call Denmark's largest non-commercial Viking market.

What happens
A volunteer-run market on the outskirts of Sønderborg with around 300 Vikings from Denmark and abroad: camp life, crafts, fighting and storytelling, no commercial stalls beyond the traders themselves. It is the natural Viking stop for visitors coming up from Germany.

Local and regional press describe a market that grew fast: around 300 Vikings from Denmark and abroad by its sixth edition, with smiths, wood carvers, bronze casters and silversmiths at work, plant dyers, mounted riders giving shows, and staged battles. The organizers call it Denmark’s largest non-commercial Viking market, meaning the stalls are reenactors selling their own work rather than traders. Admission is 80 DKK with children under twelve free. Reviews from visitors outside the region are scarce.
Our take
Als is the Viking market for anyone coming into Denmark from Germany, two hours from Hamburg and right on the border, and it falls on the same weekend as Hafrsfjord in Norway and Frederikssund’s play week. It is a genuine reenactor gathering at a fair price. Combine it with the Danevirke and Hedeby museum across the border in Schleswig for a border weekend of Viking history. Not worth a special trip from Copenhagen.

Getting there
Sønderborg has a small airport and is two hours from Aarhus and just over two from Hamburg by car. Kær Vestermark is on the northern edge of town.
