Hornbore Ting is a three-day Viking market held over the first weekend of August at Hoge Slott, just south of Hamburgsund on the Bohuslän coast, an hour and forty minutes north of Gothenburg. It has traders from across Europe, Viking boats on the water and a single ticket that covers all three days.

What happens
A market and camp on a coastal meadow south of Hamburgsund, with traders and craftspeople from across Europe, Viking boats, archery, axe throwing, music and staged battles. The association behind it works year round on crafts, theatre and sailing, and the market is where it all comes together. The Bohuslän coast in early August is reason enough on its own.
What visitors say
Regional press coverage of Hornbore Ting reads like a postcard: people barefoot in the mud, dried fish and axe throwing, smiths and craftsmen from across Europe, Viking boats on the water below the castle rock, children carding wool and making pendants, musicians teaching games. One visitor quoted in Bohusläningen said you feel tough and everyone thinks you are tough. The association has run the market since the 1990s on a site with real burial mounds and a natural fortress rock, and reviewers rate the setting as the best on the Swedish west coast.
Our take
Hornbore Ting is the Swedish market with the most beautiful location, on the Bohuslän coast in the first week of August when the coast is at its best. It is a serious market with a European trader field, three days on one cheap ticket, and boats on the water. Go for the weekend, stay in Hamburgsund or Fjällbacka, and swim between the stalls. The drive from Gothenburg is the only cost.

Getting there
Hamburgsund is about an hour and forty minutes north of Gothenburg by car, via the E6 to Tanum and then coast roads. The site is signposted from the village. Public transport reaches Tanumshede; the last stretch needs a car or taxi.
