Nordfyn Viking Market 2027: early September, dates not announced

Nordfyn Viking Market is a family-oriented two-day market on the first weekend of September in Glavendruplunden, the grove around the Glavendrup rune stone on the island of Funen, twenty-five minutes north of Odense. Around 200 reenactors camp, trade, fight and demonstrate crafts beside Denmark's longest runic inscription.

What happens

A market in a grove around a real monument: the Glavendrup stone, raised around 900 with the longest runic inscription in Denmark, and the ship setting of standing stones beside it. Stalls, smoke, music, staged combat, a warrior school for children, archery and spear throwing, craft demonstrations, Icelandic horse rides, live owls and guided tours of the monument. In 2026 a boatbuilder brought a small Viking ship for the first time. Food comes from a Viking-inspired inn and the local village association.

What visitors say

We have not found independent visitor reviews in English. The organizer calls it Funen’s cosiest Viking market, and the regional tourist board puts the number of participating Vikings at more than 200. The market is run by an association founded in 2016 and has kept the same weekend since.

Our take

Nordfyn is a small, cheap, genuinely local market, and the setting is the reason to go: you walk among the reenactors’ tents with a thousand-year-old rune stone at the centre. It is a half day for families staying on Funen or driving between Copenhagen and Jutland, not a destination in itself. Note the payment rule, unusual in Denmark: cards do not work here. The same weekend has Ishøj outside Copenhagen and Gunnes gård outside Stockholm.

Our take is based on visitor reviews, reenactor forums and the organizer’s own program, not on a visit. We say so because we think you should know.

Getting there

Glavendruplunden is in open country between Søndersø, Skamby and Otterup, twenty-five minutes north of Odense by car; from the E20 take exit 54 at Vissenbjerg towards Morud and Søndersø. Parking is free in a field with signs. There is no public transport to the site at weekends. Odense is an hour and a quarter from Copenhagen by train, and Billund Airport is an hour and a half away by car.
