Trelleborg Viking Festival (Denmark) 2027: dates, tickets and how to get there
The Trelleborg Viking Festival is held over nine days in mid-July at the Trelleborg ring fortress near Slagelse, an hour west of Copenhagen. It is Denmark's largest Viking festival, with more than a thousand Vikings in some 350 tents and a craft market of over 60 stalls, at a fortress that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023.

What happens
Trelleborg is the best preserved of the Danish ring fortresses, a perfect circle of earthworks built around 980. The festival fills the field beside it with a market, a warrior camp and daily battle reenactments, plus a reconstructed longhouse you can walk through. It is run by the National Museum, so the history is solid.
What visitors say
Visitors are unusually consistent about two things. First, the scale: more than a thousand reenactors living in around 350 tents for a week, a craft market, a falconer, Viking food, and a one-hour battle with roughly 300 fighters staged on four of the days. Second, the timing: several reviewers say outright that they would not have got much from Trelleborg outside festival week, and that the fortress on an ordinary day is an impressive earthwork and not much more.
Families rate it highly. Children can cast their own tin pendants, try on clothes and follow a daytime program, and the reenactors are described as generous with their time. Reviewers suggest one to two full days to see everything.
Our take
Trelleborg during festival week is the best Viking event within reach of Copenhagen, and the free shuttle from Slagelse station makes it a genuine day trip by train. Aim for a battle day and check the schedule, because the big fights are not held every day of the nine.
Skip it outside the festival unless you are a ring-fortress completist. The site is a circle of grass, a small museum and a longhouse, and reviewers who came in the wrong week say so plainly.

Getting there
Trains from Copenhagen to Slagelse take about an hour. From Slagelse station it is 7 km to the fortress; during the festival a free shuttle, bus 909, runs from the station. By car, take the E20 west and exit at Slagelse.
