What happens
Foteviken is a reconstructed Viking town on the coast south of Malmö, run as a museum year round. For four days in late June it fills with reenactors from across Europe: a long market street of craftspeople, a tent camp, staged battles, archery, music and food cooked over open fires. It is the biggest event of its kind in Scandinavia and the one most reenactors name first.
What visitors say
Reviews of Foteviken are consistently warm about one thing: the people. Visitors describe staff and reenactors who live in the houses during the market, dressed and working as if it were the year 1000, and who are happy to talk, explain and let children try things. The word “authentic” comes up in almost every review, and several visitors single out the outdoor village as the part worth the trip, with the indoor exhibition as a footnote.
The criticism is mild and practical. Market days are crowded, and a few visitors note that it felt busier than the museum could comfortably hold around midday on the weekend. Regular admission is considered cheap for Sweden. Parking on site is described as good, though it fills.
Reenactors themselves rate Foteviken as the market to attend in Scandinavia, both for the size of the trader street and for the quality of the camp. That is worth knowing if you want to see the best craft and the most serious kit.
Our take
If you are going to see one Viking market in Scandinavia, this is the one. It is the largest, it is the most international, and it is fifty minutes from a major airport. Go on the Monday or Tuesday if you can; the weekend crowds are real. Give it at least three hours, more if you have children who want to shoot arrows.
It is less good if you want quiet archaeology or a museum experience. For that, Birka or Gamla Uppsala suit you better. And it is a market, not a show: the battles are a highlight, but most of the day is walking, watching and buying.

Getting there
From Copenhagen Airport, drive across the Øresund Bridge and follow the E6/E22 south past Malmö, then route 100 towards Höllviken. From Malmö, bus 100 runs to Höllviken; the museum is a short walk from the stop. Parking is in fields near the museum and fills up around midday on weekends.
Where to stay
Höllviken has a handful of guesthouses and a campground. Most visitors stay in Malmö, 35 minutes away, or in Copenhagen and make a day trip. Trelleborg is 25 minutes east and has hotels.
