The Battle of Trelleborgen is a Viking market and festival held over the first weekend of July at Trelleborgen, a partly reconstructed ring fortress in the town of Trelleborg on Sweden's south coast, half an hour from Malmö. It is the weekend after Foteviken and 25 minutes east of it.

What happens
Trelleborgen is a quarter of a ring fortress rebuilt on its original site in the middle of town, with a longhouse and a small museum. For the Battle of Trelleborgen weekend it hosts a market with jewellery and crafts, a reenactor camp, guided tours of the fortress, storytelling, short plays such as “How Thor got his hammer” for children, and the staged battle itself on the Saturday.
What visitors say
Trelleborgen outside festival time gets mixed reviews: a reconstructed quarter of a ring fortress in the middle of a small town, free to walk around, with a small, cheap and informative museum open in summer. Some reviewers call it worth an hour for anyone interested in the Viking Age; one Tripadvisor headline is “It’s not worth seeing”, and another advises visiting in summer rather than winter. The festival changes everything. Reviewers who came for the Battle of Trelleborgen describe a tent village of around a thousand Viking enthusiasts, a market, a battle of some two hundred armed fighters, and children who loved it.
Our take
Trelleborgen is a festival-weekend destination. On the first weekend of July it is a full Viking event in a town centre, 25 minutes from Foteviken and 30 from Malmö, and the natural second act to Foteviken’s weekend. Any other time it is a pleasant hour if you are passing through on the way to the Rügen or Travemünde ferries, not a reason to stop. If you can only do one Skåne event, do Foteviken; if you can do two, this is the second.

Getting there
Trelleborg is 30 minutes from Malmö by car or by the Pågatåg regional train, and about 70 minutes from Copenhagen Airport across the Øresund Bridge. The fortress is a ten-minute walk from Trelleborg station.

The Trelleborg Viking Festival in Denmark is at a different ring fortress near Slagelse, on Zealand, the following week.
Combine with
Foteviken Viking Market the weekend before, 25 minutes west. Together they make two Viking weekends in a row in Skåne.
