Fyrkat Winter Solstice Market 2026: December 12 (preliminary), tickets and how to get there

What happens

For one Saturday afternoon in December, the houses of the Viking farm at Fyrkat become market halls. Vikings from the area set up working stalls with leather, yarn, wool, wood, ironwork and jewelry, much of it made by the people selling it, which is why the museum pitches the market as the place to find Christmas presents nobody else will give. There is music in the longhouse, and in 2025 a juggler gave a fire show just before the procession.

The afternoon builds to the torch procession at dusk. The Vikings walk around the farm’s longhouse, give their torches to the fire and recite verses about the wheel of the year and the sun coming back. The museum frames it as the old midwinter feast, jól, which gave the Danish word for Christmas.

This is now the museum’s own market at Fyrkat. The summer market, held in July, has not run since the COVID-19 pandemic, and the museum has no plans to bring it back as an event of its own. In late September, Hobro’s lantern walk Vølvens Verden ends at the fortress and has a market along the route, run by the Fyrkats Venner association.

What visitors say

Reviews of the winter market itself are scarce online. It is a local December tradition, and nearly everything written about it comes from the museum. Visitors to Fyrkat in general rank it first among things to do in Hobro on Tripadvisor and describe a well-run reconstruction: furnished longhouses, staff in period dress cooking, weaving and smithing, and the ring fortress with its rebuilt longhouse nearby. The one recurring criticism is that the visitor area could be better organised.

Our take

Go if you are in Jutland in December. It is small, local and short: four hours on a Saturday afternoon, free to enter, with craftspeople who make what they sell. Time it for the end, because the torch procession is what the afternoon builds to, and in mid-December the sun sets before four. Dress for a Danish December, since the day is spent walking between the farm’s houses.

It is not a reason to cross Denmark on its own. Treat it as part of a December weekend in Aarhus or Aalborg, both within an hour and a quarter.

Getting there

The Viking farm, Stormandens Gård, is at Fyrkatvej 37 B, next to the ring fortress about two kilometers west of Hobro. Aalborg Airport is 45 minutes north and Aarhus 75 minutes south on the E45. Trains stop at Hobro; from the station it is a short taxi ride or a half-hour walk.

The ring fortress, a short walk from the farm, and the Lindholm Høje burial ground north of Aalborg, 45 minutes away. In late September, Vølvens Verden ends at Fyrkat after a lantern-lit walk from Hobro harbor.
