Vølvens Verden 2027: late September, dates not announced
Vølvens Verden, The Völva's World, is a one-evening Viking event in Hobro, North Jutland, in late September, a lantern-lit walk of about four kilometers from the harbor to Fyrkat ring fortress with Viking ships, a Viking camp and market along the way and a staged völva's prophecy at the longhouse. It is built around a woman buried at Fyrkat whom archaeologists believe was a völva, a Norse seeress.

What happens
Vølvens Verden starts at sunset at Det Røde Pakhus, the red warehouse on Hobro harbor, where Viking ships sail in carrying glowing völva staffs. Everyone gets a staff and walks about four kilometers through the town: past light projections on Hobro Church, a Viking camp on the Ambu square with a market run by the Fyrkats Venner association, and a Viking ship on the Fyrkat Engsø lake. At the fortress, the amateur theater company Fyrkatspillet stages the völva’s prophecy, the Norse myth of the creation and end of the world, in the longhouse, followed by her death at the völva’s grave. Free buses take everyone back to the harbor afterwards.
The evening is built around a find. In a grave outside the ring fortress, archaeologists found a woman buried in a wagon with a metal staff and seeds of henbane, objects tied to the völva, the seeress of Norse religion whom even Odin consulted. She may have been Harald Bluetooth’s spiritual guide.
Mariagerfjord Municipality organizes the evening and sells the tickets, with Nordjyske Museer, Fyrkatspillet and Himmerlands Teater as partners. It ran for the first time in 2025, sold out, and returned in 2026. Parts of the program depend on the weather and can be cancelled in bad conditions.
Getting there
The walk starts at Det Røde Pakhus on Hobro harbor. Hobro has a railway station on the line between Aarhus and Aalborg; by car, Aalborg Airport is 45 minutes north and Aarhus 75 minutes south on the E45. The route ends at Fyrkat, two kilometers west of the town, and free buses run back to the harbor after the program.
Combine with
Fyrkat itself by daylight. In 2026 the museum and the Viking farm were open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 16:00, until October 18, so you can see the fortress before you walk to it in the dark. The museum’s own market is the Winter Solstice Market at the Viking farm in December.
