Moesgaard Viking Days 2027: dates, tickets and how to get there
Moesgaard Viking Days, the Viking Moot, is held over four days in late July on the beach below Moesgaard Museum, twenty minutes south of Aarhus, Denmark. Running since 1977 and drawing more than a thousand Vikings, it is one of the oldest and largest Viking gatherings in the Nordics and known for its mounted and foot battles.

What happens
A market and warrior camp on the beach, with the Moesgaard Museum’s striking grass-roofed building on the hill above. The battles are the draw: hundreds of fighters, some on horseback, in an open field by the sea. Each year has a theme; in 2026 visitors could try Viking trials of strength across crafts, hunting, wisdom and combat. The museum itself has a major Viking and prehistory collection, including the Grauballe Man bog body.
What visitors say
Moesgaard’s Viking Days have been running since 1977, and the local press covers them every year with photo galleries rather than reviews, so the written visitor record is thinner than the event’s size deserves. What comes through is the setting: beach, forest and a camp of more than a thousand Vikings, with storytelling, a sacrificial site, ships on the sand, jugglers and traders selling everything from mead to silver. The organizer bills it as the largest Viking gathering in the Nordics, and reenactors treat it as one of the season’s fixed points.
The practical note that recurs is parking. The public car park at Strandkiosken on Moesgaard Strand is closest, about 400 meters from the site; the alternative at Skovmøllen means a walk through the woods from the museum. Both fill on battle days.
Our take
Moesgaard is the Danish event for people who want the big battle. The horses and the numbers make it the most spectacular fight of the Nordic season, and the beach setting is unlike Trelleborg’s field or Ribe’s meadow. Come for the afternoon battle, arrive early for parking, and spend the morning in the museum on the hill, which is one of the best in Scandinavia.
Combine it with Aarhus rather than making it a day trip from Copenhagen; four hours each way is too much for a four-day event you can only see for one.

Getting there
Bus 18 from Aarhus city center runs to Moesgaard. By car, follow the signs south from Aarhus to Højbjerg. Park at Strandkiosken on Moesgaard Strand for the shortest walk, or at Skovmøllen by the museum and walk down through the forest.
Combine with
Aarhus is Denmark’s second city and a good base. The Jelling monuments, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, are an hour south. Ribe International Viking Market in early May draws many of the same traders.
