Can you camp at a Viking festival?
The canvas camp you see at a market is for reenactors, not visitors. But most big events have a campground within a few kilometers, Midgardsblot has proper festival camping, and Scandinavia's right to roam covers the rest.
The reenactor camp is not for you
The tents you walk through at a Viking market belong to the participants. They apply months ahead, meet authenticity rules, and live there for the duration. Visitors cannot pitch a modern tent among them, and at the strict markets a nylon tent within sight of the camp would be asked to move.

Where visitors camp
Campgrounds nearby. Most of the big sites are near a campground. Höllviken has one within walking distance of Foteviken. Ribe has a campground and a hostel in town. Hamburgsund has campsites along the coast for Hornbore Ting. Lofoten’s rorbuer, the fishermen’s cabins, are the local alternative to a tent. We note nearby options on each event page.
Festival camping. Midgardsblot is the exception: it is a music festival and runs a proper campsite, Utgard, that reviewers describe as calm and friendly. Book it with your ticket; it fills.
Right to roam. Sweden and Norway have a legal right of public access that allows a night or two in a tent on uncultivated land away from houses. Denmark does not, except in designated free-camping forests. Iceland allows it away from farmland with limits. This is for a quiet night in the woods, not for setting up next to a festival gate.
Motorhomes
Common in Scandinavia and well served. Most festival sites have day parking in fields and no overnight facilities; campgrounds nearby take motorhomes, and Scandinavia has many free or cheap motorhome stops.
What to expect at a Nordic campground
Clean, well run, cards accepted, often with cabins as well as pitches. Prices 250 to 450 in local currency per night for a tent pitch. Book ahead for festival weekends in July; the campground nearest Foteviken is full months out.
Weather
Nordic summer nights are light and can be cold. A three-season bag and a groundsheet, even in July. Rain is likely at some point in any week.
Fires
Open fires are banned at most campgrounds and often across whole regions in dry summers. The reenactors have permits and fire watches for theirs. Do not light your own.
