Lindholm Høje: the largest Viking burial ground in Scandinavia
On a hill above the Limfjord opposite Aalborg, 682 graves from the Iron Age and Viking Age are marked by stones set in ships, circles and triangles. The burial ground is free and open all year; the museum beside it explains it. Half a day from Aalborg.
Why go
A hillside of stones. Nearly seven hundred graves, mostly cremations, marked by stone settings in the shape of ships, circles, ovals and triangles, used from about 400 to 1000 and then buried under drifting sand, which is why it survived. It is the largest Viking Age burial ground in Scandinavia and one of the most atmospheric places in Denmark, especially in low light. The village that buried its dead here has been excavated below.
What to see
The burial ground. Free, open every day of the year, and best walked from the top down with the fjord and Aalborg beyond. Allow an hour.
The museum. Beside the site, with the finds, a reconstruction of the village and an exhibition on Viking Age life in the north. Adults about 110 DKK in 2026, under 18 free. Open Tuesday to Sunday most of the year and daily in July and August, 10:00 to 17:00 in season.
Practical
Cards. A café. The site is grass on a slope; the museum is accessible, the hill less so.
Getting there
Lindholm Høje is in Nørresundby, across the fjord from Aalborg, ten minutes by car or bus from the centre and fifteen from Aalborg Airport.
Combine with
Fyrkat ring fortress 45 minutes south, with its market in early August, and Aggersborg an hour west with its craft meet in late August. Together they make a two-day Viking route through North Jutland.
