Ribe: Viking centre, Viking museum and Denmark's oldest town
Ribe was founded around 710 as a trading place and is Denmark's oldest town. Outside it, Ribe VikingeCenter reconstructs the town, farm and market of the Viking Age; in the centre, the Ribes Vikinger museum shows what was dug up. Come in early May for the market week.
Two Viking sites, one town
Ribe VikingeCenter is a living-history centre three kilometres south of town: a reconstructed town quarter, a manor farm, a marketplace and a longhouse, staffed in costume through the season, with hands-on activities like coin minting and archery for a small fee each. It is the venue for the International Viking Market, a full week at the turn of April and May with several hundred vetted reenactors, one of the most serious markets in Europe.
Museet Ribes Vikinger is the archaeological museum in the old power station on Odins Plads in the centre. It shows what the excavations found: the bead maker’s, bronze caster’s and comb maker’s workshops of the eighth-century marketplace, and the town’s medieval layers. Quieter, indoors, and the place to understand why Ribe matters.
Ribe itself
Cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, a cathedral begun in the twelfth century with a tower you can climb, and the flat marsh landscape of the Wadden Sea beyond. It is a small town and an easy two-day stop, with a hostel, small hotels and good food.
When to go
Early May for the market, which is the best week of the year at the centre and the reason most Viking travelers come. The centre is otherwise open through the season with a program of activities; outside the market, some visitors find it quiet and pricey. Check the program before you go and budget for the activity fees.
Practical
Centre admission was around 145 DKK for adults in high season 2026, with children cheaper; activities 30 DKK each or 70 for a card. The centre is 3 km from the station; walk, cycle or take the shuttle during the market. The museum is in the centre of town.
Getting there
Billund Airport is an hour east. Trains from Copenhagen take about three hours via Bramming. From Germany, Ribe is the first Danish town of any size north of the border and about two and a half hours from Hamburg.
Combine with
The Wadden Sea National Park for birds and seals. Jelling, ninety minutes east, for the runestones. Moesgaard in July if you are in Jutland for the summer.
