Trading at Viking markets in the Nordics
Every market on this site is run by a museum, a municipality or a reenactment association, and each one takes applications from traders and craftspeople separately. There is no central application. This page collects who to write to for all 35 markets, and what the strict ones expect.
How it works
Applications go to the organizer, usually in the winter before the season, and the popular markets fill up. Most organizers publish nothing for traders in English and several publish nothing at all; where we have found a page for participants, it is linked in the table below (6 of 35 so far). For the rest, write to the organizer through their site and ask for the trader terms. Danish markets are also collected on historiskmarked.dk, which takes free listings from traders and groups.
What the strict markets require
Moesgaard is the one large organizer that publishes its rules in full, and they are a fair guide to what the museum-run markets expect. Goods must be based on archaeological finds and made by you or another craftsperson. Mass-produced items and bought-in jewelry, stones or fabric are not accepted; the page says plainly that if you bought it in a webshop, leave it at home. It is an application, not a registration: every applicant is assessed, places are limited, and you hear back by June 1 for a late-July market. There is no stall fee at Moesgaard; the museum provides the site and firewood.
Two other routes are worth knowing. At Birka, trading in the Viking quarter during the July weeks goes through membership of the Birka-Hovgården guild rather than through the operator, for a small annual fee. At Avaldsnes, taking part is free and the festival chief approves every participant. The sign-up form for June 2027 is already open, in Norwegian and English, and asks for tent sizes and arrival day up front. And at Ribe, the organizer tells visitors that foreign traders take cash only, Danish kroner or euros, and that cards do not work at the stalls.
Fees are set per market and per season and we do not print them, apart from noting where a market is free to trade at, because a number we cannot keep current is worse than none. The organizer's page has them.
The markets
Sorted by name. The month is the one the event usually runs in. Midgardsblot is left out: it is a music festival with its own vendor process.
